Resveratrol May Prevent Alzheimer¡¯s

Posted on 02. Sep, 2009

Resveratrol, with its potent disease fighting and antioxidant properties has been shown in clinical studies with mice to show great promise in battling diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. If this werent enough, researchers now believe resveratrol may have implications to prevent and even slow down Alzheimer's disease. This is wonderful news for the thousands of sufferers of this sad, brain wasting disease that steals away a persons identity and memories.

Its well documented that resveratrol supplements provide a big boost to the immune system and battles against the formation of free radicals in our bodies. These are important weapons in preventing a disease affecting the brain like Alzheimer's and even strokes. Many studies point to dangerous free radicals triggering the development of Alzheimer's. Resveratrol can fight against free radicals, perhaps preventing Alzheimer's in people that are predisposed to the disease.

The Science of Alzheimer's and Resveratrol
Scientists still have a long way to go before they can unlock the mystery of the human brain. However, they do know some things about how our brain functions. Researchers discovered some time ago that the brain is made up a large amount of fatty acids. Resveratrol has been shown to protect against the affects of bad fatty acids in our bodies by lowering cholesterol.

Patients with Alzheimer's produce an excess amount of an abnormal protein called, Beta-amyloid, which causes the development of free radicals and ultimately, the cell death that causes the devastating symptoms. Resveratrol can defend the brain against oxidative stress, caused by an abnormal level of free radicals and keep the brain cells alive and functioning.
